Meyer Foundation Awards $3.25 Million in New Grants

June 23, 2016

The Meyer Foundation’s board of directors approved the first round of grants under the Foundation’s new strategic plan on June 2. The 80 grants, which totaled $3.25 million, reflect the Foundation’s mission to build an equitable Greater Washington region in which economically vulnerable people thrive.

Grants awarded include:

  • 43 grants totaling $1,665,000 to support education and employment programs that prepare youth and adults to obtain family-sustaining jobs.
  • 22 grants totaling $1,175,000 to support programs that move individuals and families from homelessness into housing, services that enable individuals and families to remain stably housed, and affordable housing advocacy.
  • 18 grants totaling $630,000 to ensure that individuals and families in the bottom quartile of income build assets and increase financial security.
  • 7 grants totaling $190,000 to support capacity-building programs to strengthen management and leadership, assess and increase impact, and expand resources for nonprofits in the Greater Washington region.

More than 80 percent of these grants (in dollars) provide general operating support to effective nonprofits providing direct services and advocacy in the areas of affordable housing, education and employment, and financial stability for low-income individuals and families. Approximately 20 percent supported specific programs, in many cases to test new approaches or to expand promising work.
