Funding Collaboratives Support Strong Latino Communities

by Danielle Reyes
Meyer Program Officer

Danielle Reyes

According to census figures, the Washington metropolitan region is now home to more than 1 million immigrants. In addition to adding to our cultural diversity, immigrants are vital contributors to our region's economy, responsible for 18 percent of all taxes paid. While the employment status rates for Latino immigrants mirrors that of the total population, a higher percentage of area Latinos occupy low-wage jobs and live in poverty. For many, the nonprofit sector provides a critical link to obtaining a better life, better job opportunities, and a better future for themselves and their children.

The Funders' Collaborative for Strong Latino Communities, an international project of Hispanics in Philanthropy (HIP), was designed to strengthen the Latino civil sector. Across the US, it brings together local and national philanthropic dollars to support capacity building among Latino-led nonprofits as a strategy towards improving the quality of life in Latino communities. In our metropolitan area these funds have assisted grantees such as Ayuda, Escuela Bolivia, and Community Bridges with investments in their infrastructure and their capacity to provide quality services and programs to Latino residents and the broader immigrant community.

This month the Washington Area HIP Funders' Collaborative will award, for its second year, up to $425,000 in technical assistance grants to area nonprofits. These organizations can be a lifeline for many immigrants who seek a better life, but often encounter adversity and even hostility along the way. Through the leadership and services of our areas' nonprofit organizations, access to quality family services, English language instruction, and a pathway to citizenship can become a reality.

Editor's note: Danielle Reyes co-founded and continues to participate in the Metro DC chapter of Hispanics in Philanthropy and serves on the steering committee of the Washington Area Partnership for Immigrants and the diversity committee of Washington Regional Area Grantmakers. She was instrumental in bringing the Funders' Collaborative to Greater Washington.
