Michele Booth Cole
Executive Director Safe Shores—The DC Children's Advocacy Center
www.safeshores.org
This is the first in a series of brief interviews with the Meyer Foundation's 2007 Exponent Awards recipients.
Q: What is the mission of Safe Shores—The DC Children's Advocacy Center?
A: The DC Children's Advocacy Center is dedicated to ensuring a coordinated, compassionate, comprehensive, and professional response for child victims of abuse and witnesses to violence in the District of Columbia. We accomplish this through a multidisciplinary approach in our child-friendly facility.
To advance this mission, I serve as the leader of a team of talented and dedicated professionals, and with them work to provide optimal services to our clients and to create and sustain vital relationships between Safe Shores and the Washington community.
Q: What led you to Safe Shores?
A: I like to think of my being with Safe Shores as an example of preparation meeting opportunity. Safe Shores actually found me, and my years of working with and on behalf of children and youth at various nonprofit organizations ensured that I was ready when the opportunity arrived.
Q: What have you learned in your work as a nonprofit leader?
A:
- Listen.
- Civility and integrity not only matter, they are non-negotiable.
- Most often, you get what you pay for, so invest wisely and appropriately in people (staff, volunteers, and consultants) and give them the tools and training they need to be successful in their work.
- No one is bigger than the organization, and while everyone on the team is important, no one is indispensable. The mission is the bottom line.
- Be true to the mission and don't constantly try to refashion or create programs and services solely in pursuit of a buck.
- Take good care of yourself and your non-work life. For maximum impact nonprofit leadership should be a marathon not a sprint.
Q: What does Safe Shores bring to the region that makes it so special?
A: Safe Shores brings to the region a nationally respected example of the children's advocacy (CAC) model in action. This includes our unwavering commitment and unrelenting efforts to (1) ensure justice for child victims through excellent multidisciplinary teamwork, (2) make government more effective in protecting children, and (3) raise awareness about the realities of child abuse and adults' duty to keep children safe.
