News On The Green Building Act From Program Officer Karen Fitzgerald
With the passage of the Green Building Act in 2006 , the District became the first major US city to mandate that most newly constructed or renovated buildings – commercial and residential, both publicly and privately-owned – meet environmental standards for design, construction, and operation. When the new law takes effect later this year, most affordable housing developers in the City will be required to meet Green Communities standards, which encompass everything from where a building site is located to what materials are used in construction. Meyer grantees such as the Coalition for Nonprofit Housing and Economic Development and Enterprise Community Partners have worked with local nonprofit developers and DC government agencies to ready them to make this transition. But as the requirements of the law phase in between 2008 and 2012, many other nonprofits undertaking building or renovation projects – such as arts organizations, health clinics, child care centers, after-school programs, and social service providers – will also be required to meet green building standards. For more information on the DC Green Building Act, contact Enterprise Community Partners.

Deepening the Volunteer Experience: Service Learning & Advocacy
Maryland Nonprofits
Thursday, May 1, 2008
Long-term volunteers are passionate about their service to others, but can become frustrated by the daunting challenges faced by the individuals and organizations they serve. Episodic volunteers perform an important service, but may not truly understand the larger societal issues involved. This Maryland Nonprofits workshop focuses on helping volunteers answer the "So what? Now what?" questions about the community service work they perform. Workshop participants will learn how to integrate issue education and advocacy training into the volunteer experience. Other topics of the workshop include strategies for helping volunteers deepen their understanding of social issues related to their nonprofit organization's mission and a discussion of opportunities to inspire volunteers to further action and activism.
